코인데스크(CoinDesk)에 따르면, 캐나다 정부는 《강력한 자유 선거법》(법안 C-25)을 제안하여 암호화폐, 환어음 및 선불카드 형태로 정당 및 후보자에게 정치 기부를 금지할 계획이다. 그 이유는 이러한 자산이 가짜 익명성을 가지고 있어 기부자의 신원을 확인하기 어렵고, 선거의 신뢰성에 위험이 존재하기 때문이다. 이 법안은 현재 하원 1독 단계에 있다. 이전에 영국도 암호화폐 정치 기부를 받는 것을 중단한다고 발표했다.
